Marginal Gains – It Doesn’t Need To Be That Tough

As we move towards the end of 2025, it’s natural for people to start reflecting.

  • What worked this year?
  • What didn’t?
  • And what do I want to do differently next year?

For many, this reflection quickly turns into pressure. Big resolutions. Bold declarations. Dramatic changes that are meant to transform everything overnight. And yet, by mid-January, most of those plans have quietly fallen away.

There’s another approach, one that’s far more sustainable, and far less stressful: marginal gains.

Marginal gains are small, incremental improvements made consistently over time. On their own, they might seem insignificant. But when they compound, they become powerful. A 1% improvement repeated daily doesn’t feel dramatic,  yet over months and years, it changes everything.

What makes this approach so effective is that it removes the weight of “having to change everything at once”. Instead of asking, What huge leap do I need to make? the question becomes, What’s one small thing I can chip away at?

Often, what holds us back isn’t a lack of motivation or ambition. It’s habits, patterns, and coping mechanisms that once served a purpose but no longer align with who we want to be. Trying to rip those out overnight usually leads to resistance, guilt, or burnout. Marginal gains work with your nervous system, not against it.

This might look like:

  • One alcohol-free day added to your week
  • A 10-minute morning routine instead of a full overhaul
  • Noticing triggers rather than trying to “fix” them immediately
  • Slightly better boundaries around work, rest, or sleep

These steps don’t shout. They whisper. And that’s the point.

A steady, measured approach builds trust with yourself. It creates momentum without overwhelm. And crucially, it allows change to last beyond January.

As we head into a season of resolutions, consider this: you don’t need a new version of yourself by New Year’s Day. You just need to start chipping away at what’s been holding you back.

Small steps. Taken consistently. Become significant and sooner than you think.
