The Skills You Haven’t Lost, You’ve Just Stopped Seeing Them

When drinking becomes a regular habit most nights of the week, something subtle but damaging happens, and for a long time, you probably wont notice or be aware of it.

Not only are you losing energy and clarity, but you begin to ignore the very things you’re good at.

Skills that once came naturally. Strengths that set you apart. Experiences you earned through effort and growth. They don’t disappear overnight, but they slowly fade into the background as alcohol takes up more space than it deserves. What once felt important becomes optional. What once drove you forward gets quietly shelved.

Resonate?

I saw this recently with a client who came to me feeling stuck in a rut. His career had stalled, his confidence had dipped, and he couldn’t quite put his finger on what had changed. On the surface, nothing was “wrong”, but nothing was moving either.

The breakthrough came when we stopped focusing on where he was and started reflecting on where he had thrived.

We looked back to a period in his life when his career was progressing, when opportunities felt more available, and when he started operating at a high level. As we unpacked that time, something interesting happened, the skills he once relied on started to resurface.

Strategic thinking.

Consistency.

Confidence in conversations.

Leadership.

Boom, we nailed it!

They had never gone away.

They had simply been crowded out.

Alcohol had slowly become the focus and without realising it, the priority. With that shift came a narrowing of vision, less self-belief, less ambition, and less connection to what genuinely made him effective.

Today, he’s refocusing on his goals with a level of clarity that had been missing for years. But this time, he’s moving forward with the reassurance that his strengths are real, proven, and still very much his.

That conversation made me reflect on my own past.

I was exactly the same. I had forgotten the skills that once made me stand out, and it cost me opportunities I’ll never get back.

You don’t have to fall into that same trap.
