It’s Not The Amount You Drink, It’s The Reason Why

A recent client came to me feeling stuck. On paper, everything looked fine, solid career, respected by colleagues, doing “all the right things.” But underneath, they couldn’t shake the feeling that their confidence had quietly taken a hit. They wanted to feel sharper, more in control, and to actually enjoy the success they’d worked so hard for.
They were doing well, but something was holding them back.

When I asked about alcohol, they shrugged it off.
“Just the occasional glass after work, nothing to worry about.”

It was all under control.

But a few sessions in, something shifted.
They started connecting the dots between their energy, focus, and that “occasional” drink.

It wasn’t the amount that mattered it was why they were drinking.

That post-work wine wasn’t helping them unwind.
It was helping them avoid processing the day they’d just had.
The drink wasn’t bringing relaxation, it was bringing distraction.

And while the benefit they thought they were getting didn’t really exist,
the sluggish mornings and dent in confidence?
Very real.

When they realised this, everything changed.
That awareness became the turning point, the lightbulb moment where growth begins.

If you’ve been telling yourself alcohol isn’t really part of the problem,
it might be time to look again.
Because once you see the connection between drinking, confidence, and clarity, you can’t unsee it.

That’s when real progress starts.
