When I first thought about attempting an autumn marathon, I was thinking that training in the summer would be fantastic.
- Bright mornings.
- Good weather.
- Some holiday time away from work for extra long runs.
What a time to be getting fit and building your endurance.
Generally, most of my event training has been during the Autumn, Winter and Spring months, and the summer is a time for leisurely keeping the fitness at a decent level.
Winter training when it is raining, cold, dark, can be really tough and you need to have high motivation levels and good levels of resilience, but I am finding summer training to be harder than I ever imaged.
As most have experience in the UK over the past week, the temperatures have exceeded the normal averages for this time of year and there has been little escape from the hot conditions.

Sunday is normally the ‘long run day’ for most runners, but when I looked at my Strava app, I could see quite a few other runners cut their Sunday run short due to the heat, even going out early, it was still tough.
Unfortunately, when it comes to training, it is difficult to take the decision to not train, especially when you are not injured, so you need to adapt. As I mentioned, it is worth trying to find time when the conditions are a little more favourable. This isn’t always easy due to many other commitments in life, such as work, family etc, but you have to look ahead and make sure you are more than just ticking along when you know you need to be getting the miles in.
I have completed week 4 of my program. Milage wise I am slightly behind where I wanted to be, but I am feeling in good shape. 12 weeks to go!
Although we love the good weather, having it a little fresher would be nice.
