The ‘Middle Lane Drinker’

Have you ever heard this term?

Do you think you might be considered to be a middle lane drinker?

So what is a Middle lane Drinker?

It’s not someone who has a serious dependency where they are getting up in the morning and needing a drink to kick the day off.

Middle Lane Drinking is where most drinkers live.

  • You don’t drink every day, but if someone offers, you wont say no.
  • You’re not out of control, but alcohol is the one in control.
  • You’re not addicted, but in your life, you’re not really thriving.
  • You tell people all is good, its under control, but deep down you wonder if it actually is.

This is what middle lane drinking is, and I ticked these boxes. In fact I was a Middle Lane Professional.

When the penny finally dropped, this is what I realised:

  • It gradually drains your energy
  • Your thinking is impacted
  • Confidence and consistency takes a hit.
  • You’re always knackered
  • Your general appearance, self-esteem is all impacted

There are so many downsides to being in the middle lane, but you can become blind to it, the fact that its socially acceptable doesn’t help. It never looks bad enough, until it’s too late.

The highs never get as high, and lows get deeper and more drawn out.

You are trying hard to maintain your standards, but until you address the root cause, you can never progress. Of course, addressing the root cause is never easy, if it was easy, you wouldn’t have the problem in the first place.

What could be the root cause? How do we test the root cause to prove it?

There are processes which I can apply which will help you produce your own conclusions on what you need to do. It is important that you own the actions and that I don’t tell you what to do. Let’s face it, do any of us do as we are told?

Once you shift out of the middle lane, you realise just how much life was passing you by.

I got myself out the middle lane, it was hard until I figured out what was needed.

Trial and error is important but you need to make sure your mindset is in a place to learn from the outcomes, both good and bad.

I am now a qualified coach using the science that created positive psychology, and I also focus on helping others, who are now experiencing what went through in to break free from being a middle lane drinker.
