I am sure that those reading this will have read up on who I am and my background.
At the end of 2024 I decide to train as a Positive Psychology Coach, and I am proud to say that I am now a qualified coach in Positive Psychology and a coach for living Alcohol-Free. I am also accredited to the Association For Coaching.
While training as a coach, I was very fortunate to meet some amazing people along the way, and last weekend I was finally able to meet up with one of them.
The meet-up was planned via the Dryy app, and it was great to have 2 other people with us.
Those who are familiar with Dartmoor and the variability of the weather in the South West will know that you can never be too sure of the conditions until you start, and getting four seasons in one day is common. Various routes were planned as contingency, but fortunately, we were able to stick with plan A.
Then and Now
It must be said, this wasn’t the sort of thing I would have done 12 months ago, or throughout my 40’s. I would have had every excuse in the book to not do it, not because I didn’t like walking, I love it, but the influence of alcohol was draining me of all my energy. Also, I would have struggled to have the confidence to go. People who know me would find that hard to believe!
But now, I was really excited about going and meeting people who I didn’t really know. Not going never crossed my mind, nothing was stopping me from going!
Dartmoor is huge, but we covered 8.5 miles, the views were stunning, but there was something much stronger and deeper. It was a reminder of how great it feels to be clear-headed, connected, and fully present in the moment.
The moor was alive with its usual mix of wild ponies, granite tors, and wide-open skies. But what really stood out was the conversation and laughter that flowed. Without alcohol, we had discovered a new kind of social connection, one that’s grounded, energising, and real.
Walking together on Dartmoor was more than exercise. It’s community. It’s support. It’s about proving to ourselves that joy, freedom, and even adventure doesn’t need to come from a can or bottle.
Our Reflections from the Walk:
- Clarity: At the end we said how much more present we felt in nature.
- Connection: We shared stories and encouragement while also having good laugh.
- Momentum: We spoke about the processes which are needed to create a better way of living.
