When I was in my 20’s and 30’s, I was working up the management ladder, I was ambitious and very determined to prove that I was more than capable, and it is fair to say this paid off, but I was very much in the mindset of making sure I had control, so even though I would have said that I had a growth mind-set, there were certain limiting beliefs which meant in certain situations I was more fixed than growth.
Looking back, the issue I struggled to transition away from was the thought that any success was down to my hard work and commitment, and not much else, although I thought I was being a leader, I was entrenched in a managers mindset. If you have aspirations on becoming a great leader then you need to think about the following;
Are you trying to the control outcomes, or are you empowering your team to create them?
Of course there are plenty of books out there covering leadership, but I went on a seminar once which was about TRUST, and the difference between POWER and CONTROL.
This really resonated with me and has stuck with me, and has now defined my approach to leadership which I apply daily. The key to it, is having the confidence to do it.
Like in most organisations, you need to get the groundwork done for this to really be effective, but once in place, the results will paint the picture.

Power vs. Control in Leadership
1. Power is influence. Control is restriction.
- Power comes from trust, credibility, and the ability to inspire people.
- Control comes from rules, micromanagement, and fear of mistakes.
2. Power multiplies. Control diminishes.
- When you empower others, your influence grows.
- When you try to control, you limit creativity and motivation.
3. Power is earned. Control is imposed.
- Leaders earn power by demonstrating competence, integrity, and care.
- Control is usually taken, often leading to resistance or compliance without engagement.
4. Power creates ownership. Control creates compliance.
- Power encourages people to step up and take responsibility.
- Control often makes people do the bare minimum just to get by.
5. Power drives long-term results. Control drives short-term compliance.
- True leadership builds sustainable success.
- Over-control may bring quick fixes but erodes trust over time.
Can you relate the difference to your current status?
If you are reading this and you are starting out in your career, take a look at the leaders in your organisation and see which category you would put them in. Later on in life, you will look back fondly on the leaders who showed Power, while the leaders who focused on keeping Control, you will likely want to avoid if you are ambitious as they will more than likely hold you back.
