A Summer Challenge

Time For a Personal Best

For those of you who might have spotted me on the various social media platforms, you will be aware that I am going for a marathon PB this autumn. The PB has been with me for over 22 years, and although I have had a few attempts to beat it over the years, I haven’t really got close.

So tomorrow is officially the start of the 16 week countdown.

Although I may be a lot older, making the switch and going alcohol free, I am giving myself the optimum opportunity to give it a go.

There have been many books written about marathon training from high profile celebrities to sport coaches, both giving a great insights and guidance on how to prepare physically and mentally for what is tough challenge, and one which anyone can go and do.

My aim is to record the journey over the next 16 weeks, and who knows, depending on what happens, I might even publish the process as a book, but let’s not get too carried away.

As part of the blogs I will be writing and publishing on philadderleycoaching.com, I will be covering the mental and physical preparation needed for an average adult, juggling the day-to-day challenges of life, wanting to run a marathon who previously had every training plan compromised. Not from work or the day-to-day stuff, but from an adult picking up the habit of drinking too much alcohol.

So, lets look at how Positive Psychology can be the foundation of a Strategy which can lead Marathon Success

Use Positive Self-Talk

  • Replace negative thoughts (“I can’t do this”) with empowering statements (“I am strong, and I will keep going”)
  • Create a personal mantra like “One step at a time” or “I am unstoppable”

Practice Gratitude

  • Focus on appreciating your ability to run, your supporters, and the journey itself
  • Keep a gratitude journal to reflect on positive moments in training

Develop Mental Toughness

  • Reframe challenges as opportunities for growth: “This hill is making me stronger”
  • Visualise overcoming obstacles, like pushing through fatigue at mile 20

Find Flow in Running

  • Set a challenging but attainable pace
  • Focus on breathing, rhythm, and the present moment
  • Run in scenic areas to enhance enjoyment

Use Social Support

  • Train with a community, join a running group, or share progress with friends
  • Draw motivation and accountability from encouragement by others

Celebrate Small Wins

  • Acknowledge every milestone—completing a long run, hitting a pace goal, or simply getting out the door
  • Reward yourself with something meaningful (a healthy treat, a rest day, or new gear)

Embrace the Journey

  • Instead of fixating on race day, enjoy the process of training
  • Take time to appreciate how your body adapts and grows stronger
